I think you're good to genus
But I'm not very familiar with these fruit flies. To me, it looks like:


Is yours associated with any sort of tree or plant? (I'm guessing that's a mystery, since the fly came to light.)

Correct on your assumption on the tree or plant. The closest thing to a fruit tree I have are some Japanese Flowering Apricots (Prunus mume).
A nearby neighbor has a pear tree and a plum tree and another, about a half mile south of me, has grape vines and that's the extent of my knowledge of what fruit trees others in this area may have.

I had looked at the same image you linked to and noticed the comment that the blueberry maggot fly looks very similar to the apple maggot fly.

It's possible that this guy/gal is a stray blown in by the fairly strong southerly winds we had ahead of the cold front that passed thru yesterday.

I have had the lights on almost every night since March and this is the first fly like this I have seen here, at the lights or otherwise.
