Buck Moth caterpiller - Hemileuca maia

Buck Moth caterpiller - Hemileuca maia
White Rock Gap, Blue Ridge Parkway, Augusta County, Virginia, USA
June 18, 2009
Size: 1 1/4th inch
We found these gems migrating through the forests of the Blue Ridge. Each followed the one in front of them very carefully, but occasionally they got "lost" and formed their own line. They then would travel in parallel lines for a while, but eventually they merged again and resumed a single train. I followed them for half an hour, but had to temporarily leave before they arrived at their destination. When I returned about 10-15 minutes later, they had vanished. So I don't know if they climbed a tree or just moved far enough that I couldn't locate them.
