Size: 8 mm head to wing tips
There were many of these flying from the small fir tree ground cover in the woods behind our house. the outside temerature was only 4° C and it and snowed yesterday. I was surprised to still find these flies out and about. Is this normal for them to be out in such cold weather?

I wish...
that it were early for winter but, unfortunately, that's not the case here in Newfoundland. The snow blower is ready and waiting. It won't have to wait long. I still think it's odd to see insects around in such cold weather. My experience has been that they generally disappear when the temperature drops below 13° C. I guess that's why they are called "Winter Crane Flies". Thanks for the ID.
