Silovanidae: Silvanus sp.
Since my name was bandied about, I looked this up. Silvanus and Silvanoprus are candidates, but looks most like Silvanus to me based on the blunter pronotal tooth at the anterior margin (more acute in the one species of Silvanoprus around here). Need to see the tarsi clearly to be absolutely certain, which would be more relevant for West Virginia and south.

Ha! 500 Miles
Ha! Yesterday while you were making this picture I was 500 miles to the south photographing the exact same species. With luck we will at least get this to genus, eventually.

pronotum shape
In a comment on another of these not so well in focus, Donald Chandler said that the pronotum shape can determine the genus. The pictures came out a bit better this time, so maybe.
