Nebraska wasp

Nebraska wasp
15 m. NW of Fremont, Dodge County, Nebraska, USA
April 5, 2006
Size: 5/8"
This insect (wasp?) was crawling on the inside of our kitchen window one morning this week (4/5/06) in Dodge County in eastern Nebraska. I did not measure it, but I think the body was about 5/8" long. The photo shows a light triangular spot on the dorsal surface of the thorax. The central 1/3 of the front legs also appeared light. Can anyone help with an ID?

Ichneumon wasp.
This is an ichneumon wasp. Ichneumons are parasitic on other insects (spiders in a handful of cases), especially caterpillars. This specimen appears to be in the subfamily Ichneumoninae, which seams reasonable since the females hibernate as adults, accounting for its early appearance there.
