Silvanid Flat Bark Beetle - Cathartosilvanus imbellis

Silvanid Flat Bark Beetle - Cathartosilvanus imbellis
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
April 6, 2006
Size: 2.3 mm
Tom and I both photographed these beetles yesterday, he in Massachusetts and me in West Virginia. Mine might be easier to see if the beetle were on a contrasting background rather than on this orangey substance, too bad!

Tom's is here:

Here's another photo I found from yesterday (different individual):

Moved

Better late than never
This is actually Cathartosilvanus imbellis (LeConte).

Less Than a Year
It's been less than a year since I posted the image, so I say, not bad! Thanks for your help, Mike. I have moved the image to the species page.

Not sure if these two are the same species? I'll leave them at the family level unless you think they are the same.

Less Than a Year
They are the same species.

Not Silvanus, or bad angle for seeing anterior portion of pronot
Not sure which genus it is, but it doesn't look like Silvanus or Silvanoprus. Both of these genera have the anterolateral margins of the pronotum acutely angled. However, it could also just be a bad angle for seeing the anterior portion of the pronotum.

One more image
Don, Thanks for taking the time to look at these and comment on IDs. At the risking of wearing the subject out, I've posted one more image which has better contrast in the background and thus a better view of the anterior pronotal angles. Not sure if it is a good enough view for determination of genus:
