Shield Bug? -
Podisus brevispinus
Sharon, Windsor County, Vermont, USA
August 21, 2005
This reminds me of the
Red-Cross Shield Bug
I posted recently, but it lacks the obvious color pattern.
Slightly larger view here.

Don't think so.
This specimen reminds me much more of a Podisus. The truncated abdomen is characteristic of males of at least a few different genera of pentatomids.
