California Insect Survey Publications
A series of monographs about insect groups as they exist in California (in PDF format). Many useful keys and descriptions, though most are over the head of the non-entomologically-trained. Even so, amateurs will find useful information even if they can't make full use of the articles.

University of Alberta Entomology Collection
Fantastic site with photos and lots of information about many species. Allows you to search by common name, scientific name, even latitude and longitude.

NatureServe Explorer
NatureServe is the umbrella group for the natural heritage inventories of all the states and provinces and a of few other nations.

This site allows you to search by common name or scientific name. The data available includes range, rarity, and prospects for the future.

Lots of insect species are here. Those who are so inclined can also search for trees, wildflowers, vines, shrubs, fishes, salamanders, mammals, and much more. About 60,000 species are here.

A great source.

Insect Identification and Natural History
Web site for a graduate course at Univ. Nebraska, Lincoln. Has some notes and photos of interest.

InsectNet
Site oriented towards collectors. Has discussion forums, classifieds, other features.

Elytra and Antenna: US Invertebrates
I've seen some of this material before, but it seems to have been reorganized. Oriented towards rearing of large, showy insects. Has interesting observations on diet, life history.

Gallery of Common Galls
A handy page with color thumbnails of common galls, linking to larger images.

Bugwood Network
Site oriented towards forest and crop-associated insects in the southern US. Has links to Forestry Images, Invasive/Exotic species, IPM Images, and General Insect Images. These sites each have their own web address (and are running off the same database, apparently), but "Bugwood" seems to be the top level.
