stag beetle carnage!
This is one of the earliest beetles in my collection (I think I was in 8th grade). At the time I thought that it must be a female ox beetle based on the pronotal sculpturing. Can you see the light brown smear next to the head of the pin? Actually that is Elmer's wood glue filling a large hole caused by a stag beetle bite. When I found this beetle, I put it in a container with a male Pseudolucanus capreolus which instanly impaled the hermit beetle with its jaws before I could break off the attack.
