Andrena & Bombus impatiens - Andrena milwaukeensis - male

Andrena & Bombus impatiens - Andrena milwaukeensis - Male
Essex, Ontario, Canada
April 8, 2005
Size: 12mm
Two days later, still territorial. Bumblebees Bombus avoided this area for the next week.

Moved
Moved from Andrena.

Interesting observations
Very interesting observations. I wonder how I missed this one before.

the male Andrena appears to be
A. (Andrena) milwaukeensis based on size, color of thorax and T1, etc., but it is difficult to be 100% certain

Andrena males are not generally thought of as truly territorial, but they frequently pounce on other bee species and even shadows on the ground!

Obvious mismatch
I saw several times such Andrena males trying their chance with Honey bee workers, which are of similar size as their own females. But I would never have believed that one could ever land on a Bumble-bee queen! Like a Wall-Street trader, he must think more is always better. Splendid shot by the way.
