Moth Help - Computer Programming Question

Would it be possible to create a list of images in just the No Taxon "Moths" pages of the guide that moth experts have commented on? This would be very helpful for the rest of us to help with the moth clean-up.

Who are the moth experts? Virgiliu Marius Aurelian, Mike Boone, John Davis, Anita Gould, Chris Grinter, Maury J. Heiman, Chris Mallory, Robin McLeod, Bob Patterson, Dennis Profant, J.D. Roberts, William H. Taft.

Sorry I haven't been active in the moth section lately, so I have no idea who I might be missing on that list or who might not be active.

Next new feature
Now that editors can see the comments left by a contributor, they still have to poll the comments page of the various experts to see if there are any new comments (or hope they are subscribed to an image that gets a comment and then look to see if there are others). It would be a great feature if an editor could go to the comments page for an expert and find a "subscribe" button, click it, and receive notifications when new comments are left by that contributor.

as =v= suggested below, it would be great if there was a column displaying the current location of the image that was commented on.

current location of the image...
...would be extremely helpful both in the comment list and in advanced search results

Current location in advanced search results
Not sure when it happened, but I just noticed that there is now a "guide placement" column in the advanced search results which shows the image's current location in the guide. Should prove to be incredibly useful.

Thanks Mike for that! Most useful.

happened earlier today
congrats to all -- and many thanks to Mike Boone

We don't know if it can be restricted to just the "Moths" page,
but you can write to John VanDyk and ask him to send you the image numbers of the last 50 comments that Bob Patterson has made, for example. We're guessing you would have to specify a single commentator and we don't know if John could weed out the images that have already been moved into the guide, but maybe that's possible. You may want to write him and see exactly what he can easily do. Maybe he can give you a list of fifty or so images that have a comment other than "Moved from ID Request"!

Thanks John,
I did that, I'll let you know how it works out.

i would love to be able to retrieve and review comments left by a user over a specified period in this or that section, i.e. to track progress the experts make working on our stuff, and move the images accordingly. i fish out good IDs posted long ago all the time -- even in well-maintained parts of the guide...

John V. I'm not sure what types of results he can give you, but it certainly worked for me to get Bob's last 50 comments.

"worked for me..."
i feel jealous; my problem is, i have to check random expert raids into perhaps a couple of dozen sections, big and small -- and act quickly upon the comments, if any. i can't expect JVD to do this clerical job for me all the time -- and sometimes new experts emerge out of nowhere and leave many IDs on older pix...
i dunno what's so complicated about this: other entomological fora have the coveted show-all-comments-by-user-xxx tool available to everybody

Recent comments
Experts and contributing editors can now view a user's recent comments by following a new link on the user's profile page.

own comments
What about also allowing (non-expert, non-editor) users to view their own recent comments? Just a thought. I realize we can find all our own comments through the subscriptions page.

using the marvelous tool: the first experience
i went thru all the comments of Bob Anderson, Steve Gaimari, Owen Lonsdale, Charlie O'Brien, Proctos, Dave Smith, and Bill Warner (several new taxa fished out, dozens of abandoned images moved) -- so there is no more work processing their pre-11/21/2010 comments. To avoid duplication, we have to identify the experts who leave IDs without moving the images, and coordinate who shall review whom based on our familiarity with guide sections and individual experts. Opening a separate thread on the Editors' Forum to report progress may be a good idea. Seeing on which page the commented item is sitting next to the listed comment would be a dream come true.

separate thread started

John Oswald
I just noticed that John has begun making IDs on a few of the Ascalaphidae and may be continuing on to other neuropterans... I'll follow through with moving anything else he comments on. :-)

thanks a lot, mon ange
most helpful

I went through all of Terry Harrison's comments (microleps) and many of Jan Metlevski's (mostly Noctuoidea), which also yielded several new guide pages and the moving of a number of abandoned images... I'll try and get to the rest of Jan's eventually.

You guys are awesome. I agree with v that we should take it a step further and discuss how to go about it in the editors forum.

The same for
BugGuide Advanced Search. When I look at a family or genus for say NJ, it would be nice to see where in the guide the images are located. The title "Moth", "Unknown", or "ID please" isn't enough.

A very useful addition.
I wonder, when a frassed image is gone for good, does the "frassed" comment disappear also?

It will also be good to be able to find comments I've made in the past but can't remember when or where

...And a bit disturbing to see that I've made 14,775 comments. I guess that includes all the images I've moved.

W O W ! ! !
can't thank you enough; colossal amenity & utility

This is such an amazing new tool. I love the way the person's comments come up with red asterisks if I haven't read them. Great work!

Advanced Search - Request for Mike Boone ?
Perhaps we should request that a search for comments be added to the Advanced Search? That way anyone could search for a person's comments in a certain section of the guide. This may have already been discussed (in fact I'm sure it has) but I can't remember what the outcome was.

I don't think this specific thing has come up before. Let me think about it a bit. :)

permission to hold my breath?
