I've been watching these fly away for a week or two. I finally get close enough for a decent picture, and I end up with sunlight on the lens!

On Wild Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) in my front yard.

of the genus Tipula. Subgeneric level id for the western species calls for a detailed examination of a male's tail end - Chen

That brings me to 3 crane fly genera from 2 families in one little suburban yard- there's lots of diversity around if you look for it.
