Moved from Square-headed Wasps.

This is a Lestica, probably confluenta because of the strong punctation of the metasoma but one can't be completely sure from this picture (otherwise there is only L. producticollis in the east).

Yes, this is a "square-headed wasp" in the family Sphecidae, subfamily Crabroninae. Probably in the genus Ectemnius or Lestica. Males in the genus Crabro have bizarre shield-like flanges on the front tibia, which are used to cover the female's eyes during mating. I have no idea why:-) Very nice photo. Look for these small wasps hanging out around aphid colonies drinking honeydew.
