Orb spider? - Enoplognatha latimana

Orb spider? - Enoplognatha latimana
Silverton, West Kootenay, British Columbia, Canada
August 2, 2010
My mom calls these orb spiders but I am hoping someone on here can tell me what it really is. We were in the Southeast part of BC when we came across them. They were in the vegetable and flower gardens. Your help is appreciated!

Not an ID, but
it reminds me a bit of Theridion:

But I'm no spider expert, and could be way off, so wait to see what others have to say.

Welcome to BugGuide!

I see the similarity, and thank you for your response! Do you know if any species of Theridion are in Southeastern BC?

The closest thing I came up with was Cob-web Weaver Spider(Enoplognatha ovata)...

Actually, I think your suggestion is a better match...
...and we have records from BC as well. You may be onto something! Hold on to see what the spider pros think.

Theridion and Enoplognatha
can look very similar. In this case I'd guess it's Enoplognatha. A front view showing the eyes is helpful in this case. Enoplognatha latimana is probably also possible.

~ Because there is no full dorsal or eye view to make this ID fairly certain, I think we should probably frass this one.

I added the only other clear pics I have of the spider, maybe that will help

Yes Enoplognatha
Thanks, those pictures verify we have the right ID. Now to figure out species. Enoplognatha latimana has this pattern, which is why I am leaning in that direction. I'd like to know more about their range before moving to species.

..
E. latimana has been found in BC, according to the latest Canada checklist. It is considered an introduced species.
