Keyhole wasp? - Trypoxylon politum

Keyhole wasp? - Trypoxylon politum
howell, Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA
November 17, 2010
This trypoxylon politum nest was collected in summer '09. By May 2010, all the mud daubers had hatched out. Its now the middle of November, and this mini pipe organ wasp hatched out. Not sure weather or not to release it since its cold out and theres no flowers at this time.

thats odd
thats kind of odd that another species of wasp would hatch out of a mud dauber nest. ive never heard of that happening before. ive definitely seen them before, though. as for whether or not you should release it, i dont think so- if youve got an enclosure for it, which it sounds like you do, i would keep it safe and warm for awhile, until it gets warm again.

It happens, alot
I know first hand that it happens all the time. This spring i had a bunch of strange insects posted on ID request that came out of mud dauber nests. Pipe organ nests almost have their own ecosystem.
The only enclosure i had at the time had a small nest of p. exclamans males in it, and lets just say they didnt get along with the keyhole wasp. I had to find a plastic container for the keyhole wasp.

Yes.
Well, yes to your identification anyway :-) I can't tell you what to do with the wasp, though.

Thanks
Strange it would hatch so late
