Dynastes tityus larva? - Osmoderma
Walpole, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, USA

Size: 1.5"
A neighbor just cut down a very large, old (damaged) Black Locust tree and in the lower half of the trunk found many of these large larvae. Lots of frass and rich "compost." I have read that locust is a favored tree of this species, but was not sure if they are currently found in Southwestern NH.

Phillip - I looked up this genus right here on BG and think you are correct. I think the frass shape is different and will take a pic and post.

Unlikely
Dynastes tityus does not get into New England. You may be able to rear these to adulthood by leaving them in a good supply of compost. I'm sure there are instructions on the Internet.

I read...
somewhere that they are in MA (don't recall where now) however, after looking up Osmoderma as Phillip suggested and compared the pics here on BG I believe this could be it.
