Beetle - Holoparamecus pacificus
18.1 km ENE of Roosevelt, Gila County, Arizona, USA
September 25, 2010
Size: < 2mm
Collected from rotting bases of fronds of dead sotol, oak/juniper/mesquite woodland.

All pics taken with automontage system. Actual montaging done with CombineZP.

Will supply more accurate measurement when available. Have not attempted to key yet.

Holoparamecus pacificus
It's tough to be sure from the pictures, but it looks a lot like Holoparamecus pacificus. Could be one of the Mexican species though. To be honest, no one has really looked extensively for merophysiines in the southwest. Awesome pic though!!!

we'll call it that for the time being. they seem rather elusive, at least in the wild -- i can't remember ever finding more than one in one spot... well, maybe once in a moldy grain overrun by Aglenus brunneus, Cryptophagus, Tenebroides mauritanicus, Alphitophagus bifasciatus, Palorus spp., some anthicids, et je ne sais quoi...

I've collected Holoparamecus under bark of dead Populus in the Sunflower area, not too far from where this specimen was found.

Wow. How so fast? Do you have the Harvard types memorized?

I didn't have a very good idea on this one. I will check tarsal formula and try to key it this weekend.
