Coriarachne or Bassaniana)
You're right, this is one of the flat-carapaced Bark Crab Spiders. Two species are known from California, "utahensis" and "brunneipes", and both should occur in Lassen County. The taxonomy is in flux right now between the two genera with some arguing that the"utahensis" should be placed in the genus Bassiana while "brunneipes" should be in Coriarachne. Others feel that the division between the two genera is not significant and that all the North American bark crab spiders should be sunk into Coriarachne. Unfortunately, the features tentatively used to distinguish these genera are not visible in the photo so we should probably just leave it where it is in the stacks until the taxonomy is sorted out.

Thank you R.J.!
I really appreciate your comments on this spider - and your confirmation that it is a Bark Crab Spider. Perhaps a 'subfamily' will come forth through the review of the two genera.
