Hard at work - Solenopsis

Hard at work - Solenopsis
Venice, Sarasota County, Florida, USA
April 8, 2006
Size: very small
I sat on the swing and watched these guys for a long time before I realized I had the camera. Looks like some sort of pupae (about a 1/2 inch or smaller) they were dragging.

Moved
Moved from Ants.

Fire ants (Solenopsis sp.) - workers
They were indeed dragging a Lepidopteran pupa, or Chrysalis. Maybe someone can go to a narrower ID with this unlucky prey.

Fire ants (Solenopsis sp.) - workers
They are several Fire ant species in the South-Eastern States, some of them introduced from tropical America. However, it seems this one is the common native one.
