Ladybird Beetle w/ Pupa? - Chilocorus

Ladybird Beetle w/ Pupa? - Chilocorus
Boca Raton, West Palm Beach County, Florida, USA
April 9, 2006
I found these on a Bay tree in my garden. I am guessing it is possibly a adult Harmonia axyridis Ladybird beetle surrounded by others in the pupa. Can anyone verify or correct this?

Yes, Lady Beetle.
This is not Harmonia, though, but one of the species of "twice-stabbed" lady beetles in the genus Chilocorus (or, to hedge my bets, a closely-related genus). The larvae have the spiny appearance shown here, and the pupae are encased in the last, split larval skin. Nice illustration of the life stages!

I once saw a twice-stabbed lady bug
I once saw a twice-stabbed lady bug. It fell or flew from a maple tree that was over looking a bench outside my house in the summer. It landed on my mom's hat! I also remember seeing a lady bug sized beetle which was purple and had black spots. I think it was a lady bug but it could have been a leaf beetle. Are some kinds of lady bugs purple? I would like to know. Thanks

Thanks Eric
I appreciate the comments Eric and the clarification of the ID. I forgot to mention that the previous day there were other freshly emerged beetles and each was a differnt color scheme like yellow with black spots and so on and so forth. Maybe that will help zero in on a final ID.
