Golden Silk Orbweaver - Nephila clavipes with yellow wasp - Trichonephila clavipes

Golden Silk Orbweaver - Nephila clavipes with yellow wasp - Trichonephila clavipes
Okeechobee County, Florida, USA
November 21, 2010
Again, perhaps someone can identify the prey.

Looks to me like a yellowjacket, Vespula
but I'm no expert.

Yep
They do like Golden Silks

Well, look at that. . .
a yellow jacket dismembering a Golden Silk instead of the other way around. . . that is amazing. I wonder if the yellow jacket just happened upon the dead Golden Silk, or if he actually administered the coup de grĂ¢ce?

Targets of Opportunity
Having raised a large family, Goldens' season comes to an end. Time to expire. You will notice our posts are both in November. Being further south, yours is a little later. The yellow jacket is just an opportunist, unaware of the role reversal. There's a balance out there and it will always remain so. We're just the voyeurs trying to make sense of it all.

Well said. . .
I had no idea about this role reversal or even that there was a drama being played out between these two species. It's amazing and humbling.
