Tibicen davisi, Davis' Southeastern Dog-Day Cicada (MALE)
Tibicen davisi, Davis' Southeastern Dog-Day Cicada
This species is common across the state of Florida and often active well into the winter months in the southern half/third of the peninsula (July-January records are not uncommon in Florida!).

Host other than pines?
BG states that T. davisi davisi prefers long leaf pinelands. I'm curious about this since our habitat is hardwood hammock (mix of temperate and tropical species) dominated by live oak. The one thing we don't have is pine trees. It also states that in captivity the adults will feed on other plants. Apparently this also occurs in the wild, since these are fairly common in the fall at this site.

Likely
Cicadas are not thought to be host specific but are host preferential.
Most of the literature
, collection records, and observations for this taxon place davisi in pine dominated ecosystems, where the nymphs emerge in great numbers on pines and adults preferentially feed from pines.
Races, Demes and/or semi-species (species complexes) may also exist across the ranges for many of these taxa. N. davisi exhibits some geographic variability in size, color, pattern, and call. Thus far, preliminary analysis of davisi has not revealed anything more than "ssp. harnedi" being quite distinct - and much closer to auriferus (as most of the physical characters and range adjacency would suggest).
