detached casebearer moth cases from mature fruits of great water dock (Rumex britannica) - Coleophora benestrigatella

detached casebearer moth cases from mature fruits of great water dock (Rumex britannica) - Coleophora benestrigatella
Randolph, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
November 21, 2010
Size: 3.5-5 mm long
Cases pinched closed at tips but tubular and often open at attached bases, and frequently torn or chewed open elsewhere. Cases evidently spun by former inhabitants rather than stitched from vegetation, with longitudinal seams patched by inner layers of same material, as if during expansion. Old frass concentrated at rear of cases. No larvae, pupae, or exuviae observed.
