Bumblebee - Bombus rufocinctus - male

Bumblebee - Bombus rufocinctus - Male
Milton, Halton, Ontario, Canada
August 27, 2010
I think this may be Bombus melanopygus but I am not sure. I can't seem to find any in the guide that look exactly like this as this one seemed to have a lot more red than the ones in the guide. I also never tried identifying bumbles before...thought one with a red butt would be an easy one to start on. I only saw a handful of these guys out of hundreds of bees this fall (well possibly thousands of honey bees but many 'regular' bumbles as well).

Bombus rufocinctus
male, I think (should have enlarged eyes)

Thanks!
Thanks John.
So the red belted does not always need the yellow at the tip then? That's why I had dismissed B. rufocinctus, mine was all red, not just a red 'belt'.

Male rufocinctus are quite va
Male rufocinctus are quite variable, they are colored pretty much any way they want.
