Larvae?
Incredible Edible Park, Irvine, Orange County, California, USA
April 12, 2006
A young something? Seemed to be gnawing on the petal, with no apparent damage. Area is agricultural.

eating pollen, perhaps
Predatory lady beetles also eat pollen sometimes, especially if aphids aren't nearby. One species can survive solely on pollen from egg hatch to adult. (Yours isn't that species. Not sure quite what it is, but I'm working on it.)

Lots of ladybirds in the area
The agricultural folks may put them there for aphid control. I did see aphids a couple hundred feet away. Should I send out invitations and set up a picnic table?
