Very abundant in pitfall samples among overgrown vacant lots and urban gardens.

Are you sure? I don't mean to question someone who has much more expertise than myself but I have been getting many of these in samples so I have a decent gestalt image of how they look and when I viewed the other examples of this species here in the guide, they seem different not only to the picture I posted but to the others I've seen in general...

Hi Anthony,
This is unquestionably an Apocellus, a genus in which only one species is currently recognized in your area. Browsing the bugguide photos, I can see that there is probably one more species (i.e. Tom's photo) but one would need lots of material and dissection of males to properly sort this out (and females in Oxytelinae). For the purposes of Bugguide, all I can say for certain is genus Apocellus.

Just curious, what gives this
Just curious, what gives this away as Aleocharinae? Without properly keying it out I was looking at the "neck" which is a characteristic of Paederines.
