Crablike Spiny Orbweaver Spider - Gasteracantha cancriformis

Crablike Spiny Orbweaver Spider - Gasteracantha cancriformis
Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, USA
July 10, 2004
I know there are a few pics of this species on the site already, but I wanted to add an image of a Florida specimen. (where they can be quite common)

The webs are quite large for the these spiders, and this individual was pretty big.

Siting in Port Orange, FL
We just saw one on our patio in Port Orange, FL. It was descending from the patio roof. Good to know it is harmless. It is certainly very interesting. Thanks

Orange belly black back
This little guy keeps making his web across my walkway to my front door. I keep apologizing to him because I have to break his web. I've seen the most unusual spiders lately! He's little but is so very cool! I live in Austin, TX and I've seen a few other posts on this spider here in TX. I'm so glad he's harmless so he can keep living here!

Thanks!
Elizabeth

name-appropriate....
thanks...I was wondering what is living on my lanai!
Now...it is pretty and "(d) all of the above"...
but, I am concerned about it's choice of location...and my cat, too.
...is it dangerous?

totally harmless
Sorry if someone already answered this, but I didn't see a reply and didn't want to leave you thinking it might be dangerous. This spider is TOTALLY HARMLESS! ...and on your lanai likely to catch annoying and potentially harmful bugs.

Great shot!
I can almost see a clown's face. Look for the two eyes, the nose, and the mouth.

Bravo!
Wonderful photo of this fascinating spider.
