I think there are 3 or 4 morpho species of Apenes that we identified in the LRGV study that may be new. It would be a fun project, but would probably require study of the Mexican / Central American species as well.

Admittedly, I have not studied the Apenes in depth. However, the species shown in your links is well known to me as I have a long series from the LRGV. It is similar to A. nebulosa type images from MCZ (Baja, CA), but does not have the lateral margins of the elytra entirely light colored and the tips of the elytra are dark whereas the MCZ specimen is light. Also, and probably more importantly, the head of your specimen is quite smooth, with only scattered small punctures - this is consistent with my long series. The head of the MCZ type and of my specimens of A. nebulosa has longitudinal rugosity. At this point I'm not convinced they are the same.
