Ant Cricket - Myrmecophilus oregonensis

Ant Cricket - Myrmecophilus oregonensis
Figueroa Mountain, Santa Barbara County, California, USA
December 11, 2010
Size: ~3mm
Found under rock in association with harvester ants. Rock was situated in non-native grassland with serpentine outcrops bordering manzanita dominated chaparral with scattered foothill pines. Thinking this cricket is either a male or immature, under same rock as .

Very hard to tell maturity and gender
without examining them closely. This one (based on "large" size) I would guess was mature (?). And since females do have a short ovipositor (can't see one here), I'd guess it is male (but the ovipositor could be hiding out of site). The ovipositor is present on the nymphs too, and on nearly mature nymphs it is almost the same as on adults, just a bit shorter.
