Identification
Wings usually with a U-shaped marking
Anterior crossband at least as thick as posterior crossband (distinctive when visible)
Legs are usually entirely dark, rarely fore tibiae can be dark brown
Face with hair on the upper and lower halves
If the wings are unmarked, check the leg chaetotaxy - if there are no long bristles as seen in C. mundus females, C. patibulatus is a safe bet

Eastern USA, Southern Canada
Remarks
This is the only species of the C. patibulatus group found eastward of Texas.
