Geotrupes semiopacus - female

Geotrupes semiopacus - Female
Hereford, 39.6011, -76.6426, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA
September 6, 2005
Size: 21 mm
Dung-baited pitfall trap in woods. Large Geotrupes species typically either dull metallic green or reddish purple.

ID tips
ID'd with the help of Phillip Harpootlian. The impunctate elytral striae point to G. semiopacus. This is a female as there are no anterior tibial projections (compare to male on image 47889). The actual specimen is bright brassy reddish purple, not so shiny as with G. splendidus but nevertheless quite beautiful, although the photo image came out more of a dull greenish bronze.
