Found under a rotting log in a thick bed of damp Redwood duff. When handled it gave off the distinctive odor of bitter almonds.

Be careful.
You do know that the odor is that of the cyanide compound the animal releases in self-defense....right?

Why yes, I found out later that day. Thankfully the slime from all the Rough-skinned and Coast Range Newts I found that day (part of a herp survey) kept it off my skin. Sorry- just my sense of humor at encountering so many potentially toxic critters so close to home.

Thank you for the heads up though. I didn't know at the start of the day and knowledge like that can prevent some rather unfortunate incidents.

You're lucky you didn't get sick. I'm not an expert my any measure, but bright or fluorescent colors are usually a good sign of danger among insects and other animals. Be careful out there.

Thanks Brandon! I actually am quite careful with critters, not just for my own sake, but I don't like doing anything that I know stresses them out. I think my sense of humor my have made me sound more risk-taking (or purely foolish) than I actually am. They certainly are very pretty, eye-catching (read poison advertising) millipedes, that's for sure!
