Bombyliidae--Lordotus - Lordotus striatus

Bombyliidae--Lordotus - Lordotus striatus
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA
October 11, 2010
Size: BL~13-13.5 mm
This Lordotus bee fly is on Alkali Goldenbush at Sentenac Cienega. Its wing venation and dark markings on the wing are very similar to Lordotus gibbus, Fig 290 in Hull's Beeflies of the World, 1973. It is not as golden as the L. gibbus on BugGuide,#464401, but it does have orange hairs fringing the thorax. It also has the black stripe and hairs across one of the lower abdominal segments and seemingly some kind of a white line down the middle. Interesting, both images were taken on 11 Oct 2010, one in eastern AZ and ours in Anza-Borrego near Scissors Crossing.

This seems to be L. striatus. It is closely related to L. gibbus; females can apparently be separated by the longitudinal stripe of silvery tomentum on the abdomen (yellow in gibbus) and the dark band across tergite 4 (abdomen all yellow in female gibbus).

Moved from Bee Flies.

Thanks so much for the ID, Joel. I have so many Lordotus and trying to figure them out is so difficult. It's wonderful to have this handsome Lordotus to species!

Moved from ID Request.

Nice find, Lynn.
Suggestion: Move your post to Bee Flies for quicker exposure to the experts. Seems likely to go to species.

Thanks Ron
for the advice. I figured out how to move it!
I would love to get to species! I have so many Lordotus. . .
