Formica? - Formica incerta

Formica? - Formica incerta
Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA
April 14, 2006
Size: 7.5mm

James
Thanks for the identification and info.

Probably Formica incerta
This is a pubescent species, but not so much so as F. dolosa. It also is overall smaller, and has shorter appendages and a relatively broader and rounder-sided head. Both are fairly common in open, especially sandy habitats in that part of MA.

Moved
to no taxon page so IDed species can be added to taxonomy page at the species level.
This group was previously submitted at the species level, which only allowed the subspecies level to be added under it.

Yes - pallidefulva group
Compared with a Camponotus, the less humpbacked thorax and the conspicuous ocelli on the head are the main differences.
