Coleoptera
Maybe Cleridae. Was it found under bark?

 
Doubt it.
Cleridae are usually much lighter than this, pale cream and brown, plus the urogomphi are on A9 on a plate which is more heavily slerotized than the rest of the body.

I commented on a different image that I would say Melyrid.

 
Redwood post
It was roaming around on a redwood post. Very little fallen tree debris except needles and leaves in this area as it is public so is kept 'neat'.
