Tiny Golden Flecked Spider Image 1 of 2 - Tetragnatha

Tiny Golden Flecked Spider Image 1 of 2 - Tetragnatha
Wilton, Inland Barrens, Saratoga County, New York, USA
December 18, 2010
Size: < then 1/4 inch
I had one whacky guess with this, as an immature Agriope, but I'm probably way off the mark. Active outside at 28 F, actually moving up the side of the house. Any idea? Thank you!! Kenny Image 1 of 2

Guessing Tetragnatha

Let's see if the spider experts agree.

Ken see
image http://bugguide.net/node/view/463345, look like two separate species no doubt? Is this a huge genus, as in members?

According to the Guide,
there are 14 species in the USA/Canada. Unfortunately, you're unlikely to get a species level ID from a photo alone.

Well with
14 species not being that much, if you'd lead me to a key, or a PDF excerpt from some bigger compendium, I have this one alive in the frig- I'd run it through the key. Got a scope here. Any possibilities?

Tetragnatha in NY
Most of the keys I've seen ID with the help of a close-up of the chelicerae like this

I'm not sure, but this late in the year I'd guess you have a juvenile, and it's not IDable with a key.

Lynnette I see
makes sense, it is tiny. Love the way it rests, all stick like. Why it was out at 28 F is beyond me. It seems more concerned with resting now then when it was outside. I'm mainly keeping it to see if I can get a good photo of its orb. I have some drosophila, it should take em.

Pretty
darn good Ken!
