Unknown Wasp - female

Unknown Wasp - Female
Montrose, Laurens County, Georgia, USA
December 20, 2010
Size: approx. 10 mm BL
Found in pine tree on a branch about seven feet high. Hyper-active and seemed to be looking for something, probably lunch. It hopped onto my arm while I was holding the branch still. I was somewhat surprised to see this as temps never got out of the 40's on this day. I have looked everywhere for this and can't quite match it up to anything. I believe it to be a braconid, but I ain't no expert, for sure. Note the relatively short ovipositor. Sorry for the lousy shots, but she wouldn't hold still for nothin'. As a side note, I have seen this type several times, with some variations but was unable to get a picture until now.

Probably Barichneumon. In 1971, Heinrich described a species, Barichneumon crassipunctus, from the southeastern US which seems to agree with this photo in coloration. In a 1977 work on the Ichneumoninae of Florida and neighboring states, he revised the status of crassipunctus as a subspecies of Barichneumon sphageti, but Heinrich's subspecies are typically merely the ends of clines, so are generally not worth recognizing.
