Cocoon - Antheraea polyphemus

Cocoon - Antheraea polyphemus
Ault Park Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA
December 18, 2010
Size: about 2 inches long
This cocoon was found in the leaf litter under a tree. Don't remember what kind of tree.

Moved from Moths. Has to be a saturniid at that size, and I suspect polyphemus too but I'm not 100% certain.

Moved from ID Request.

If that's unhatched I'd leave
If that's unhatched I'd leave it outside under some leaves in a flower pot or something. The adults only live for 2 weeks and they're not exactly common. It's best not to mess with it's internal clock.

Cocoon
This looks like a polyphemus moth cocoon Antheraea polyphemus.

I have
the identical cocoon found attached to a white oak about 12 inches from the ground. Also thought Polyphemus based on the more "round" shape for this Saturnid coccon. I'll get a pic up, or email and I'll send.
