There were a few of these galls on a tree I think was a Prunis sp.

From Dr. Gagné:

"I believe the gall is a more rounded specimen than shown in my red book fig. 413. The gall midge photos (good shots!) do not preclude Rabdophaga rigidae. With drawings, and even photos if only one can be used, one is forced to pick a single “typical” gall for the illustration. In the present case, it appears that the gall did not prevent further apical growth."

These two look like the illustration in his book, and are typical of the ones I've seen:

Your midge does resemble the one I reared from one of these galls.

Thanks for checking. I'm glad you got some good shots of this species to add to my old ones taken with a Nikon Coolpix point & shoot.
