Spiny Witch Hazel Gall Aphid - Hamamelistes spinosus

Spiny Witch Hazel Gall Aphid - Hamamelistes spinosus
Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
December 25, 2010
This was on a Witch Hazel bush.

Moved
Moved from Unidentified Galls. Somehow no one has submitted a photo of one of these before. Maybe because they're easily mistaken for fruits, if one doesn't know what witch hazel fruits look like.

Spiny Witch Hazel Gall
It was too cold to find bugs, so I went out looking for galls, and found a few that looked different. Charlie, thanks for identifying this.
