This looked like a gladiator but the underneath was different. If you can add information to this fly, I would be grateful. I could not find a match in the guide.

Thanks for the ID, Tony. I suspected it might be different than those previously listed to bugguide. If there a diptera guide book that you would recommend?

I can't think of any guide book (like those for butterflies, moths, and beetles) for Diptera. Arnett's book (1) would possibly be the most useful. There is a 3 volume set "Manual of Nearctic Diptera" published by Agriculture Canada in the 1980's that is technical and excellent but I am not certain that it is still in print. Practically all info on Diptera is published in scientific journals.
