Caloptilia sp. - Caloptilia rhoifoliella

Caloptilia sp. - Caloptilia rhoifoliella
Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee, USA
January 1, 2011
Size: length 6 mm
Came to porch light. I think it's 0630 Sumac Leafblotch Miner (Caloptilia rhoifoliella) or 00633 C. sassafrasella. It seems like an unusual time of year for these.

Moved from Sassafras Caloptilia. I think this is rhoifoliella based on white on costa, leg coxa, and palpi

C. sassafrasella
You're right that it is one of the two species that you named, and they are quite similar. The very high length-to-width ratio of the forewing of this moth, and the brown ground color (versus more charcoal in C. rhoifoliella), indicate C. sassafrasella.
