Looks like
something in Eristalis
I might think Eristalis tenax (Drone Fly), but I'm no expert and I'm mostly basing that on what I have here in NJ.

It sure looks like what you have suggested. I have seen them here in Virginia. This one was at a pretty high elevation 10,800 feet or so in the subalpine zone, not quite alpine tundra but getting close. That is quite a tolerance range. There shouldn't be any polluted water at this elevation for breeding. Thanks for all of your help on all of the images. - Rob
