Lacy cocoon/shell - Wockia asperipunctella? - Wockia asperipunctella

Lacy cocoon/shell - Wockia asperipunctella? - Wockia asperipunctella
Lanark, Ontario, Canada
January 10, 2011
Size: ~7mm
Found about chest-height on a relatively small (~8cm dbh) Trembling Aspen.

Wockia asperipunctella? Guess based on Eiseman & Charney, who state: "The bumelia webworm moth ... spins a delicate, golden cocoon with a very coarse, rectangular mesh ... Wockia asperipunctella, only recently discovered in Ontario, makes a similar cocoon on aspen and willow."

We also have Chain-dotted Geometer here (also mentioned under "Lacy Cocoons"), but I would have expected the cocoon to be larger.

That must be it. I don't think I've ever seen a photo of this cocoon; the passing reference to it in this paper may be the only information I had to go on when I wrote that. Nice find!

Thanks
Thanks, Charley. I'd paused to check out a bagworm case, or I might never have noticed it. I thought immediately of the spongillafly cocoon on the front of your book, but when I got back with photos realized it didn't quite match. I'll have to keep a watch for the adult Wockia when I'm mothing this season.
