I don't think any hickory has five palmate leaflets like this. All the other examples I've seen of this mine have been in Iowa (see guide page).

I used to see these all the time when I lived near Dayton. I think I actually reared one once (I'll see if I can dig it up).

I just reared some last week
(from mines collected in Ohio last May). I was expecting an
Agromyza
, given that there are several that make linear mines on woody plants, but it turned out to be a
Phytomyza
! I'll get the specimens to Owen Lonsdale in a couple of months and will move these images accordingly when I find out what they are. I'll be interested to hear if you find your specimen(s) though.
