photo gallery of the Spencer Entomological Collection
many photos of syrphidae pinned specimens from the Spencer Entomological Museum entomology archive. Different views; top, bottom side make this especially useful for identification though not as pleasing as live shots and of course colors tend to be washed out. I find many species here not found elsewhere. Not organized in any discernible way so I had to use the search function to find what I was looking for.

Flower Flies (Syrphidae) -
"This is the home of Flower Flies (Syrphidae) where participants will edit and maintain their classification, upload images, share bibliographic resources, among other activities."

Looks like a great resource of information.

Authored by Chris Thompson.

Hover Fly Survey of LA County
Funded by the Santa Monica Mountains (SMM) National Recreation Area, we are conducting a survey of hover flies in Los Angeles County. This is a joint effort by Drs. Brian Brown of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (LACM) and James Hogue of California State University, Northridge (CSUN), with input and help from Chris Thompson (USDA- retired). Besides surveying and databasing the material in local collections, we are also doing field work and sampling with Malaise traps in the SMM area. So far, we have identified about 100 local species.

Syrphidae of Ontario
Interesting looking project to create a guide for Ontario's syrphids. Publication of the booklet is expected in 2006.

Detailed key, giving flight periods--no illustrations.
PDF version also available, but contains no additional information.
