Stem Borer in August - Languria

Stem Borer in August - Languria
Caroline County, Maryland, USA
August 28, 2010
Size: about 10mm
This larva is beginning to metamorphose. It was found inside a stem of Lupinus perennis on August 28. For larvae found in June and July see images Photo#485126 and

Pupa
This is a pupa rather than a larva. Do you have a picture of the slit/puncture that was on this stem? I'm curious because the larva you found in the stem with a slit

looks like a moth larva to me, but the larva from the stem with a puncture

seems different--I wish you had a shot showing the legs, but it seems like it could be a beetle larva, presumably Languria. Unfortunately we don't have any images of Languria larvae to compare.

Moths and Beetles
First, thanks for the correction on terminology. I am a soil scientist by training, and appreciate the schooling!

I have only one photo that shows some more of the stem condition from which the Languria PUPA was removed, and I have added it.
The pupa was in the position it fell into when the stem was opened. There is a white soft patch of material that may or may not be related to the beetle, we did not observe it inside other stems. We do not have a picture of the slit on this stem because lupines in Maryland go dormant in July. By late August, as in this case, it is no longer possible to see little damaged spots when the whole stem is brown and starting to fall apart.

I do however have some other photos of the larvae and the corresponding slits, I will go through them and see what might be suitable to post. Thanks so much for responding!
