Stem Borer in August - Languria Caroline County, Maryland, USA August 28, 2010 Size: about 10mm
This photo shows the larva as discovered in the field, still partially in his lupine stem. It is very difficult to break open stems without damaging the larva, partly because you don't know where the larva will be. We did notice though that by this time of year the larvae tended to be lower in the stem, even underground where the pith ends and meets the woodier root tissue. Please forgive image quality, it was near dusk.
