Carrion Beetle - Heterosilpha ramosa

Carrion Beetle - Heterosilpha ramosa
Table Rock, Jackson County, Oregon, USA
April 18, 2006
Size: 1in

Thanks
Thanks to everyone who helped with the ID. This is the first time I had seen this beetle, so I was curious to know what it was. Good stuff.

Carrion Beetle
Family Silphidae. This is a western species that is new to bugguide. I don't seem to be able to put my hands on an ID source at the moment.

Thanatophilus?
Thanatophilus?

Heterosilpha
This is most likely Heterosilpha ramosa. The genus Heterosilpha is distinguished from other silphids by the three branching costae on each elytron. There are only two species of this genus in North America. The other species known from the west coast is H. aenescens, but that species is, at least in the specimens I have seen, usually more shining/metallic. any other comments about H. aenescens?

I agree.
I agree with Guy, this is very likely to be H. ramosa. I found them to be relatively common when I lived in Oregon. Moving to guide page.
