The male on the next post was indeed from the same species.
Although a so-called "invasive" plant species, Reynoutria japonica is a goldmine for spotting solitary Vespids during late summer here in Western Europe too.

We also get a lot of Vespids (and other things too) on Japanese Knotweed. We debated taking it out of the garden because it's invasive, but decided to keep it because of all the insects it attracts.
